Hello my fellow cat lovers!
This year, picato.net turns 10 years! As most of you probably already know, this site connects cat lovers from all over the world since 2006. With almost 160'000 pictures posted and countless kind comments, this community is a unique place on the web for many of its contributors. I would very much like to keep it this way, and go a few steps further.
Running a site on the scale of picato.net, sadly, is not free. To pay for the hosting fees, ads have been part of picato.net from the very beginning. Unfortunately, the income from ads has never been enough to pay for the hosting fees. Each year, I invested quite a lot my own money (and time) to keep it running. Still, I'd really want to focus on developing picato.net into an even better site.
For a start, I'd like to remove all the ads from the site, for several reasons:
- Ads never paid enough to sustain the costs.
- They take away valuable screen space that could be used otherwise.
- There are privacy concerns with online advertising.
- Ads with a lot of animations drain the batteries of laptop and mobile users.
- Lets face it, some ads are just plain annoying.
To do this, I'd like to raise donations of approximately 2000$. Thats the cost of running picato.net for one year (not counting any work on my part). I would also like to improve the site with more features such as better design, making use of todays big (and small) screens. This includes optimizing the site for mobile users on smartphones and tablets. If we manage to raise more than the bare minimum of 2000$, I will use it to pay for hosting in the coming years. It will also allow me to spend more time to work on these features.
This is why I need your support. Please help me remove ads, keep picato.net running and make it ready for the next 10 years! The amount to donate is up to you. When you click the "Donate" button, you can fill in the amount to donate. There is also an option to make the donation recurring monthly, should you want to keep supporting picato.net, which would be greatly appreciated.
