They secrete a poison to protect themselves. It won't hurt the cat, but it makes them gag if they try to pick one up in their mouths. Most cats just know not to try it. Robocat did pick one up in his mouth once, and never did it again!

No working farm for a little ways. There's a textile mill about 1/2 mile from here, and I've heard there are feral cats there, so maybe from there. Maybe their mother was dumped too, cats appear and then disappear here frequently, and I only see them once or twice on my security cameras.
